Walk on Wednesday

As part of International Walk To School Week we had our Walk to School morning on 13th May and a group of around 100 people- comprising students, teachers, parents and infants- joined us. It was a fantastic turnout to complement the superb weather and a huge thanks to all who took part. Hopefully this good weather will inspire more people to leave their cars aat home and walk to school in this beautiful weather!

National Title for Third Class

Huge congratulations to Ms Doyle’s Third Class who won first place in ‘A Decade of Centenaries’- an All Ireland competition sponsored by the Department of Education and Skills, Mercier Press and University College Cork School of History. As part of the ‘Decade of Centenaries’ commemorations schools and students at all levels of primary and post-primary schools across the island of Ireland were invited to enter the all-island schools’ history competition. Ms Doyle’s class have worked extremely hard for the past few months, researching how World War One affected Dundalk and its inhabitants, and this diligence has been duly rewarded. Well done Ms Doyle’s Class on a remarkable achievement- the first national title for our school.Check out the links below to find out more!

Grandparents’ Day

The CBS has been a hive of activity over the past few days as part of Catholic Schools Week. First Classes visited St Bridget’s Shrine at Faughart while Fifth Classes took part in the Seinn Concert held in the Redeemer Church. Many classes participated in a range of in-class activities to celebrate Catholic Schools Week of which the theme this year was Catholic Schools: Called to Serve. We concluded our celebrations with a Grandparents’ Day which saw over 150 extra visitors to our school. They were treated to a selection of poems, prayers and songs and a Prayer Service. Following this, our guests availed of  tea or coffee and a variety of sweet treats- with parents and some members of staff contributing their baking skills! After break our classrooms were open to all grandparents to let them see their grandchildren working and playing, as well as to see how schooling has changed over time!

We were delighted to see such huge numbers join us in celebrating a very important time of year for our school. Huge thanks must go to the organizing committee of Mrs Hanratty, Mrs Corcoran and Ms Conroy who, as usual, did an amazing job and the large amount amount of visitors, coupled with their positive comments regarding the day was a tribute to the work of the team. Thanks also to the Parents’ Committee, parents, SNAs and teachers who helped make the day such a success.

5th Class Entrepreneurs!

Monday Jan 19th saw the CBS Primary School in Dundalk welcome a very special visitor as Patrick Joy of Dunleer based company SureTank visited the school to pass on his experiences of entrepreneurship. Patrick’s story is a very successful one as he has developed SureTank from 15 employees based in Dundalk in 1995 to 800 workers in 7 factories worldwide in 2015. SureTank are the co-ordinators of the Junior Entrepreneur Project in Dundalk and both 5th classes have budding businesses in the pipeline and hope to put the information they received from the 2013 EY Entrepreneur of the Year to good use. Ms Sheridan’s class are hoping to make a successful business by selling Dundalk Guidebooks- full of useful information for tourists and native Dundalk dwellers alike. These are to be accompanied by personalised bookmarks. While Mr. O’Connor’s class are developing a series of comic books to sell to children who can turn them into their own creations by colouring and adding to the comics. Both classes hope to have a Showcase within the school in the coming weeks to display, and hopefully sell, their wares!image_1

Creative fun in the library

Ms. Sheridan’s 5th class attended an Environmental talk in Dundalk Library today. Sarah, from the Rediscovery Centre in Dublin, gave a very informed presentation about waste management. Using only recycled materials, the children then created some creative Christmas decorations.

Science Week 2014

Science Week ran from the 10th to the 14th of November this year and was a great success. Gareth Kelly, a civil engineer and lecturer from DKIT came and spoke to the 5th classes about the work of an engineer and how Ireland has an impact on the world’s environment. He finished his excellent and enjoyable presentation with a hotly contested quiz!Lots of teachers carried out various experiments on topics such as gravity, wind resistance, colour blindness and balance.

The highlight of the week was Mr Dunlevy’s Experiment Roadshow where he tested the theory of gravity, showed the effect of wind resistance on a paper ball, made toothpaste for elephants, constructed musical straws and, finally, launched a water rocket to the delight of the whole school. This was a fantastic showcase of scientific experiments using everyday objects and was really enjoyed by pupils and staff alike!
