As you may be aware we have been working on developing ‘Healthy Eating Policy Guidelines’ for our school. A group of staff, pupils and HSE staff have come together to work on these guidelines. This work has been part of the Schools for Health in Ireland – Health Promoting School Initiative supported by the Health Promotion Department, HSE DNE.
The aim is to help all those involved in our school community – parents, children and staff, in developing positive and responsible attitudes to eating, and to appreciate the contribution that good foods makes to health.
Please find enclosed a draft copy of the guidelines for our school. We would appreciate if you could read these and forward any comments or changes you wish to make by Friday April 22nd.
Many thanks for your ongoing interest and support.

We love World Book Day in the CBS and this year was no different! Some classes went to local book shops to buy books using Book Tokens, some classes dressed up in their favourite characters and some classes held competitions. Here are a selection of prize winners from Second Class! Check out our Twitter account (on the left hand side of the page) for more information!

Friday January 29th saw the 5th classes take part in a St Brigid’s Cross Making Workshop in the County Library. As well as learning how to make the traditional crosses, the children were entertained by the stories of St Brigid and her many miracles. At the end of the thoroughly enjoyable workshop the children were allowed to take home a piece of St Brigid’s cloak. Both classes had a great time and learned a huge amount. Thanks so much to the ladies who helped us!
On Friday December 18th, St Patrick’s Cathedral was the venue for our Christmas Carol Service. The tale of the Nativity was told through story and songs. The school choir and instrumentalists, under the joint stewardship of Ms Coggans and Ms Quigley, were magnificent and the readers told the story of the Nativity in a reverent and respectful manner. All students, and parents alike, joined in the singing of the traditional carols, along with our school chaplain, Fr. Brian Slater. Thanks to everyone who attended, participated or helped out in any way. We hope you all have a pleasant and peaceful Christmas and we’ll see everyone back safe and sound on Wednesday January 6th.

The choir have been very busy in the run up to Christmas. On Friday the 27th of November we were asked to sing at the opening of Dundalk Santa Run. The children sang beautifully and were rewarded with hot chocolate and mince pies for their efforts. We will be carol singing in the Marshes next Wednesday after school and also at our school’s Christmas Carol Service. In February we will be off to Belfast for the Peace Proms. A big thank you to the children for giving up their time after school every Tuesday, the hard work is paying off!!
Best of luck to Dundalk FC in the FAI Cup Final on Sunday in the Aviva Stadium. The team have achieved so much this year and hope to achieve greatness by winning the double. Stephen Kenny was in our school 18 months ago and since then he has managed Dundalk FC to two league titles, the EA Sports Cup, the President’s Cup and the Leinster Senior Cup. The FAI Cup would complete the set! Best of luck from all at CBS Primary!
Pictured below are our Cross Country runners who took part in the recent Cross Country Championships in DKIT. Their coach, Mr Michael O’Connor, accompanied them on the day. All athletes competed to their best of their ability and were a credit to the school. Well done to all involved!
We marked the launch of our Health Promoting Schools 2015/16 by taking a walk around our local area. The whole school enjoyed taking in the sun’s rays and it gave us the perfect opportunity to take in the beauty of nature close to our school. This is just one of a number of exciting initiatives planned for this year!
Members of CBS Student Council made a presentation of €300 to Cara Cancer Centre. Money raised from the council’s recent jumble sale.
